Notes for Chimes At Midnight

Film: Chimes At Midnight

Year Of Release: 1965

Director: Orson Welles

Notes from viewing number 1 (25.10.2021)

Rating: 10/10

- My fourth Shakespeare film. I don't know if you can really call Chimes At Midnight a Shakespeare film, as it really is Welles' own Shakespeare play. It does borrow from some Shakespeare plays, but at the end of the day, it really is Welles' own creation.

- This is probably the best film ever made for Shakespeare lovers. I contains refrences to all several of his plays, and combines all the tropes into a great story. Chimes At Midnight was the culmination of Welles' own love for Shakespeare, especially the character Falstaff, and it's just an amazing film.

- Welles may be the best Falstaff of all time. I would even say that it may be his best role. There's so much charm and life in his performance. He really nails every aspect. Great performance.

- There is an totally unique scope to this film. Everything feels massive and grand and epic. It's an incredible acievement. The battle scenes are amazing, and Welles' mise en scene cinematography and groundbreaking editing shine.
