Notes for Mad Max: Fury Road

Film: Mad Max: Fury Road

Year Of Release: 2015

Director: George Miller

Notes from viewing number 1 (23.10.2021)

Rating: 10/10

- Right from the start, the desert wasteland world of Fury Road is stunning. All form of society has been erased, and it's every man for themselves. Great world-building from George Miller here.

- The biggest complaint people have with Fury Road is that Tom Hardy isn't as good as Mel Gibson. And while I understand that Gibson's portrayal of Max has become iconic, I do think Tom Hardy is even better. It's a kickass performance, but one with surprising amounts of depth too.

- What can be said about Charlize Theron's performance as Furiosa? It's badass. It has serious depth. It's a great step for female characters in action. It's an amazing performance, and the one that made Furiosa one of the best characters in 2010's cinema.

- My favorite performance is Nicholas Hoult as Nux. He makes Nux into one of the most fascinating characters in modern cinema. He is a madman whose only wish is to "die historic on the fury road". It reflects the extreme toxic masculinity that can be found in the world of Fury Road, where the only goal is to die for your leader. It's an amazing performance.

- When it comes to action, this may be the greatest action movie ever. There's several things happening at once, but it's all edited together in a way where you never miss a beat. Action doesn't get better than this.

- I think the way approaches feminism and toxic masculinity is great. The society of the War Boys revolves around extreme toxic masculinity. The one goal is to die for your leader, and do so in the most masculine way possible. The War Boys also treat women as things, but one of the main messages of the film is that women infact are not things, they are human. It isn't the stuff you expect to see in a Mad Max film, but it only makes it even better.
