Notes from viewing number 2 (17.10.2021)

Rating: 6/10

- First of all, the concept of Free Guy is great. It's The Matrix meets The Truman Show, and I love it. It's also a concept that you explore a lot of themes with. Does Free Guy take any risks with this concept? No, of course not! It's a summer blockbuster stupid! But does that stop the concept of Free Guy from being good? No.

- I must say, I love Free City. The warm and perfect look of the city mixed with the constant chaos and destruction is great. It actually feels like a place, and that's something not many films can do.

- Ryan Reynolds plays Ryan Reynolds, and if you don't like Ryan Reynolds, you aren't going to like this movie. I myself thought it was a charming performance, and a totally OK one.

- The supporting cast is also perfectly OK. Jodie Comer gives the best performance here, and gives loads of charm and even some depth. Lil Rey Howery is a good comic relief characters, Joe Keery is perfectly fine, and Taika Waititi ... I'll wait with Waititi.

- The whole action subplot is ridicously stupid and most of the films plot holes can be found in it. It just doesn't work for me at all.

- This film's comedy is great. Sure, not all jokes land, but those who do land, land incredibly well. Dude is the highlight for me, but there's so many good ones.

- Of all the stupid ideas, the in-game police takes the cake for me. It's just a stupid idea for more action, and I actually hate it. And they kill him once, and then act like the problem is solved. Talk about plot holes.

- The action is actually pretty good. It's entertaining, full of pretty good gags, and never becomes messy.

- Why would Antwan hide proof that he stole someone come in his game? That's just stupid.

- So ... Taika Waitit. When Waititi first showed up in this film dressed like a total douche, I thought to myself: «Great! Finally some really great comedy!», but then he opened his mouth and uttered the most unfunny lines I have ever heard. Sure, he has some good bits (the KFC rant), but most of the time, he is a mixed bag.

- When players get their glasses removed, they disconnect. But in one scene, Jodie Comer takes off her glasses, and continues to act normal. What happened?

- The scene where Guy finally finds out he is a video game character is actually pretty good. It never feels emotionally manipulative, and that's pretty rare for blockbusters.

- The scene where Buddy helps Guy accept his nonexistence is actually pretty deep. I didn't think a video game themed blockbuster was going to reflect my personal philosphy on life, but it sure did.

- There's this moment in the fight scene between Guy and Dude with all these stupid refrences, and it's the most hypocritical moment in cinema history. The film's main message is: «These big companies are running for these small indre companies», and then it hits us with refrences to Avengers, Star Wars and Fortnite. Incredibly ignorant, and just completely stupid.

- Free Guy is a mess, but it somehow manages to solve this mess in a way where I feel completely satisfied in the end. Free Guy isn't a good movie, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy watching it.
